Do I need the WiFi dongle to connect the TAP controller to WiFi?

The original TAP Controller requires a WiFi Dongle. All other controllers in the TAP Ecosystem have integrated WiFi.

Yes, a TP-Link TL-WN823n WiFi Dongle is needed to connect the original TAP Controller to local WiFi networks and can be purchased here

Note: TAP II, as well as all of our other controllers, have integrated WiFi and do not require a WiFi Dongle.

If you’re unsure what type of controller you’re using, you can easily tell the difference between an original TAP and a TAP II Controller by looking at the user interface:

How to Tell the Difference Between TAP and TAP II Controller

If the Start button and the Menu button are on the left side of your touchscreen, you’re using an original TAP Controller.  If the Start button and Menu button are on the right side of your screen, you’re using a TAP II Controller.
