What are the differences between TAP and TAP II?

Both the original TAP and the TAP II Kiln Controllers are precise with intuitive, easy to use touchscreen controllers. However, there are some important differences...

Are you trying to decide between a TAP Kiln Controller or a TAP II Kiln Controller? What’s the difference? Why is TAP II less expensive if it’s the newer version?

Comparison of features and UI for TAP and TAP II Kiln Controllers

Here’s a quick list of differences between the TAP Controller and the TAP II Controller:

  • The TAP Kiln Controller is capable of providing multi-zone temperature control for up to 3 independent zones. The TAP II Kiln Controller only provides temperature control for a single zone.
  • The TAP Kiln Controller is compatible with Type K, Type R, or Type S thermocouples, with inputs for up to 3 different thermocouples. The TAP II Kiln Controller is only compatible  with Type K thermocouples and has a single thermocouple input.
  • The TAP Kiln Controller, when paired with the TAP Kiln Control Mobile app , includes every capability as part of its Free Subscription plan (other than Remote Start) as part of our promise to legacy users. TAP II Mobile app users will need a Premium Subscription for making real-time firing adjustments, remote schedule creation and editing, and exporting logs, in addition to remote start.
  • The TAP II Kiln Controller has built-in Wi-Fi integration. The TAP Kiln Controller requires the purchase of a Wi-Fi Dongle to connect your kiln to your local network or pair your controller to the TAP Kiln Control Mobile app.
  • TAP II Kiln Controller has a streamlined UI with refreshed graphics to give it a more modern feel.

Outside of those differences, both controllers have the same features. Which one is right for you largely comes down to whether you need multi-zone temperature control or whether you only need to manage temperature for a single zone.
